Everybody loves a human interest story. But what makes this concept more noteworthy is that it is taken in the streets of New York, where everyone from all walks of life roams. It is a place where everyone relates to each other, from the sharply-dressed entrepreneur to the homeless man on the other street corner.
In a way, street photography always tells a human interest story, which is why it is one of the most favorite genres to express images artfully. You can do it too, with the help of these simple ideas.
Be specific with your subjects

There are way too many subjects you can choose from in any busy street alone. Apart from people, some other subjects can be a specific location or any form of transportation.
You can never go wrong with a motion blur photograph of a bicycle whizzing by. Or a fire struck zigzagging through traffic, with its sirens blaring.
As for location, a bustling place like New York City is always picturesque. There is a reason why photos of the Flatiron Building in Manhattan or the Brooklyn Bridge are still racking up likes on Instagram.
Make use of contrasts

Contrasting patterns are always eye-catching. These can be a line pattern or a set of colors. It shows so many things in one photograph, which tends to divert our attention from one detail to another.
Colors, for one, are fun to play around with. There are the standard combinations such as blue and yellow that stand out but do not limit yourself to these. Feel free to explore other mishmashes as you wish.
Contrasts aren’t always the first thing you’ll look at when taking a photograph, so treat this as a challenge. See what you’ll come up with.

Shoot it portrait style

We’ve mentioned Humans of New York in the intro because their particular style is what made them successful. Portraits of people on the street are always going to be a hit.
Everyone will be drawn to a face, as it shows the human side of a person. They tend to evoke a specific emotion which people can draw a story from.
The idea here is to take a portrait of someone and make it look as naturally as possible. To do this, be courteous and respectful of your subject’s personal space. It would be much better if you can build a rapport and make them feel more at ease before taking a photo.
Look for smiling faces

You can never go wrong with a smiling face. It automatically arouses the feeling of warmth and happiness whenever we see one, and it’s part of human nature.
Using a person smiling candidly will always come out well in street photography. It may be a bit mundane, but the genuine smile of a random person can still be contagious. You can do this candidly, from afar. But if you can do a close-up, it would be much better.
